Welcome to my "Library"
Michael Connelly - One of the best writers of the seamy, L.A. hard-boiled detective novel. Right up there with Raymond Chandler. Anne Rice - Nobody does vampires better than Anne. The Vampire Lestat is one of my favourite books of all time. Stephen King - The Green Mile is one of the most compelling stories I've ever heard (listened to it, unabridged, on audio, twice). King is a real story-teller. John Grisham - My favorite writer of legal thrillers. Did you know that John Grisham self-published A Time To Kill, before he was picked up by Doubleday?
Me with Robin Cook, and with Ray BradburyRobin Cook - Acceptable Risk. Coma. What a great mind - and a very well-spoken, articulate, gracious man. Victor Hugo - The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the greatest tragic novels ever written. Ray Bradbury - The Illustrated Man. The Martian Chronicles. Something Wicked This Way Comes. He's the only sci-fi writer I really like. Plus, he's a nice guy, and a cat person. Oscar Wilde - Picture of Dorian Grey, and The Importance of Being Earnest, are just two of my faves from this rapier wit who was far ahead of his time. Piers Anthony - His fun-and-pun filled Xanth novels are great, but what really got me was his Incarnations of Immortality series - what an imagination. One of the greats! Brian Freeman - A young, up-and-coming horror author, whose first novel, Sins of the Children, has gotten excellent reviews. Way to go, Brian! Joe Bob Briggs - One of the smartest, funniest writers out there and luckily for us, he specializes in a great niche subject: bizarre movies. I once had the pleasure of interviewing Joe Bob for the Gothic.net website. JF Gonzales - An eclectic author, editor, and columnist. I've only read his horror so far, but am looking forward to trying some of his "dark crime/fantasy fiction" - sounds intriguing. Besides, how could I resist an author published by a house called Festering Brainsores? You must read his creepy, "crabby" novel, Clickers. J Newman - Author of such odd titles as "The Telltale Fart", and "Long Pig Blues at the Poor Man's Cafe." Tamara Thorne - Horror, humor, and hairballs (from the kitty characters) -- what more could a reader want? One of my faves is Tamara's chilling ghost story, The Forgotten. Brian Knight - With words like Dark and Black in his book titles, both from Dark Star Publications, I think I detect a, uh, "dark" theme here. Well, Brian is a horror author so it all makes sense. T.M. Gray - Theresa Marie Gray is a terrific horror author and all around cool chick (when she's not writing, she gets down and dirty working on her husband's lobster boat!). Check out the neat pic of her with Stephen King, and find out what she has a "thing" for. (Hint... it's what most women really want!) Michael Marano - Michael is the author of an award-winning novel (Dawn Song); he's a terrific movie reviewer and interviewer; and, perhaps most importantly, a super guy. I have to thank him for his great advice, and compliment him on his ironic sense of humor. He's a regular contributor to Gothic.net, Dark Echo, and many other respected horror zines. Maria Alexander - Website of the talented and beautiful horror author and dark poetess. Read some of her stories online, some of which have been nominated for Stoker awards. (My favorite is Hail Mary's and Black Roses.) Cody Goodfellow - Author of Radiant Dawn. One of the best authors of apocalyptic science fiction working today! Chris Dauten - Author of Lianna's Children, a true work of art in the vampire genre. Alan Spencer - Humorist writer often featured in Razor magazine, you may remember Alan from his TV sitcom days -- he created and wrote the Sledge Hammer! series. Check out his website for funny stories, and upcoming appearances. Mark Edward Hall - The "other" horror writer from Maine! Michelle Holt - Michelle's website is called "Poetically Speaking" and I enjoy her naturalistic prose. She lives in Phoenix with her husband, David and exhibitionist pooch, Giddeon. Her pagany poetry has been published in Sedona magazine.
I also enjoy Margaret George (my favourite historical novelist - I recommend Mary, Queen of Scotland & the Isles), Camille Paglia (Sexual Personae, non-fiction, is a really great book about women in the world), Walter Mosely (Devil in a Blue Dress is a great audio book, read by Paul Winfield), Desmond Morris (very witty anthropologist whose books, Bodywatching, Catwatching, and Horsewatching, are among my faves), Pamela Des Barres (I'm With The Band, one of the greatest, most fun, rock 'n roll memoirs of all time), Graham Masterton (Feast, about a cannibalistic cult, is one of his best), Anne Rule (one of the best true crime writers, ever), Patricia Highsmith (writer of the Ripley series, and Strangers on a Train), Kay Nolte Smith (she wrote a wonderfully imaginative historical novel entitled A Tale of the Wind, which I loved), Dean R. Koontz (Watchers, The Bad Place), Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, and his autobiography, Travels, are must-reads), Edgar Allen Poe (The Telltale Heart, The Raven, and The Black Cat), Elizabeth Peters (my favorite mystery writer; her novel on Richard the Third is wonderful), Joe Queenan (I'll admit, I haven't read any of his books, but his acerbic articles in Movieline make me laugh til I cry), Chris Fuhrman (author of The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys; it was his first and last book; the young author died of cancer prior to the novel's publication), Delacorta (he writes French mystery novels featuring the characters Gorodish and Alba; the movie "Diva" was made from one of his novels, but it was pretty watered down in comparison), Philip K. Dick (the king of science fiction), Chuck Palahnuik (author of Fight Club, and an excellent paranormal romance called Lullaby), Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code), and last but not least, my mom, Nancy Bacon, author of several books, including Love & Dreams, and Whitney Houston: Good Girl / Bad Girl. Dark Echo - This email zine and website, run by Bram Stoker Award Winner Paula Guran, is one of the best sources for writers with a dark bent. List of Book Reviewers - This is a great reference for writers looking to have their books reviewed by professionals. This site conveniently categorizes reviwers by genre. Preditors & Editors - The Science Fiction Writer's Assn. web-guide to Agents, Writer's Awards, Book Publishers, Conventions, Publishers, Related Sites, Resources, Warnings (who's bad news in the book biz), and more! (By the way, this site is the proud recipient of the Preditors & Editors "Author's Site of Excellence.") Broad Universe - Just for us chick writers. Informative and entertaining, Broad Universe helps promote female authors of not only horror, but fantasy and sci-fi as well. Write Market - Angela Hoy's place - another great source of info, for all writers in general. Big List O' Zines - Excellent resource for writers who want to be on the Web. Magazines on the Web - Another super source for mag writers who want to be on the Web. Bookland - Generate your own barcode from your ISBN within seconds, for free, on the Net. www.dictionary.com and www.thesaurus.com - Self-explanatory. History Buff - History research site. One of the better sites I've seen on this; easy to navigate. Yahoo!, Dogpile, and Ask Jeeves - My favorite search engines. I've done a lot of successful research using these. Maven's Word of the Day - Ever wonder why we call dead people "late"? Ever wonder where the expression "a lick and a promise" comes from? If so, this is the site for you. Jive Talk - Fun translator. Change your letters home into jive, Southern belle, British, etc. 1001 Ways to Market Your Books - invaluable resource for all writers. There is a book available for purchase, plus lots of free tips on this site. Publisher's Weekly - Keep abreast of what's going on in the publishing world. Writer's Digest - Check every 24 for the "Market of the Day." There are also hundreds of markets, all listed by category. Quotations - This searchable database contains thousands of quotes from the sublime to the cynical. If you have a specific quote in mind, search by author or key words. If not, there's a random quote generator to give you as many as ten responses at a time. You can even customize the collections from which your quotes are being drawn. My favorites are the Oscar Wilde quotes Æ that man was a genius! Ralan Conley - As far as I'm concerned, this is THE site for serious authors of horror and fantasy to get the skinny on the those lean markets. This one's a bookmarker, thanks to that crazy Viking who tirelessly tracks down what's hot and what's not (such as folded publications and editors gone AWOL). Ralan's a super writer too, but I decided to list his site in this category, since it's so above-par and always up to date. HWA - L.A. Chapter - These are my people! Horror Writer's Assn. local chapter's web blog. Karnival of Wicked Writers - Good mix of horror writers and reference. Even I'm in the sideshow; you can vote for my site here.
Double Dragon Publishing - DD is a high quality small press that specializes in genre paperbacks and e-books. Look for my fully illustrated novel, Rock N Roll Fantasy on their site. Amber Quill Press - The gold standard in publishing! They have published several of my novels in paperback and electronic formats. Pendragon Press - Great site featuring the literary offerings of Christopher Teague. This site has several different titles available, including the anthology he edited, Tourniquet Heart... Look for my story, Anatomically Incorrect. Chris is also the publisher of Nasty Snips, a no-holds-barred horror anthology. Look for my story, The Maiden Sings. Prime - Prime is the publisher of the above-referenced paperback, Tourniquet Heart. I'm hoping to see more of my works published by them; they're the real deal! ImaJinn Books - This small, but very high quality publisher, consistently puts out the very best supernatural romance out today. My favorites are the vampire stories! I've favorably reviewed two of them (Nancy Giddeon's). Dutton - Publisher of Seductions: Tales of Erotic Persuasion. Look for my short vampire story, Le Petite Mort.
Book-A-Minute - They understand that our time is valuable. We want to experience the wonder and excitement of the fine art of literature, but reading actual books requires a significant time investment. BAM's got the solution - their ultra-condensed books include everything from classics (Beowulf condensed to just a few lines!) to Sci-Fi and Fantasy (Tolkien tapered down to two!). Funny stuff. Dark Delicacies Book Shop - Little shop of horrors and all things dark and delightful, in Burbank, CA., run by owner-operators, Del and Sue Howison. Borderlands - Comfy bookstore (complete with lounging areas) with a vast offering of horror and fantasy, owned by Alan Beatts. The store is located in San Francisco, but their inventory is available online. Mind Like Water - This is a great place to read eBooks -- free ones, and some to buy and keep as your very own as well. Project Gutenberg - Here you will find free downloadable classic books from authors like Shakespeare, Poe, Dante, as well as well-loved favorites like the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the Tarzan and Mars books of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Alice's adventures in Wonderland as told by Lewis Carroll, and thousands of others! Fantasy Readers - This is one of the few sites online devoted entirely and completely to the genre of fantasy. Audio Philes - If you enjoy audiobooks, this is a great resource site.
Animal Movies Guide - Here's a book I wrote equally for animal lovers, and film buffs. International Generic Horse Assn. - The world's largest all-breeds registry, and home of HorseAid, the rescue organization my husband and I co-founded. The Horse's Choice - This site is all about the equestrienne me, and horsing around. Viking Saga Ranch - I bought three Icelandics from this Solvang, CA., ranch. Elisabeth Haug is one of the pioneers of Icelandics in the U.S. This is a great site, very well put together with lots of eye candy (and what could be sweeter to see than fuzzy Icelandic ponies?). Icelandic Horse Magazine - One of the best mags on Icelandics. Paso Finos - My Paso Fino, Peregrino, is the prettiest one in the world of course, but check this site to see some other fine examples of this fiery Spanish breed. HorseQuest - This is a really great resource for horse articles, news, training tips (some from yours truly), online photo contests, and classified ads for horses for sale, stallions, tack, trainers, etc. Cats - Everything you always wanted to know about kitties. Elaine's Cat Stories - Paws Publishing is the virtual home of Minkey, Chuck, Nathan, Mr. Mouse, Miss Kiss and baby Amber, kitty stars of the books, Cat Tails and Cat Paws. Although I've never traveled with my cats, I could sure relate to the anecdotes in Cat Tails. Elaine really knows how to tell a funny story!
Me & Bailey kitty, and with ZorroShambala - Tippi Hedren's big cat shelter. I love the cougars. Ernest Hemingway's Cats - See the writer's beloved polydactyl cats. I once had a seven-toed tabby-point Siamese named Hemingway (1988-2002), in homage to the great author. Cute Cats - See a new, cute cat every day. (And send in your photos.) Ferret Legalization - Ferrets make the best pets! I met some in Nevada and Washington, and have several online friends with ferrets. Help make them legal in California (they are currently listed as wild animals by the Dept. of Fish & Game).
Corrie's Ferret Page - THE best resource for ferret photos, graphics and postcards on the Net... believe me, I've looked! It's where I got the gamboling ferret graphic, and also there's a really neat movie of a real ferret playing on the site. Guess what? MORE FERRETS! - This is a website that shows ferrets in fine art. Monty Python's FERRET SONG, Fully Animated - Courtesy of the "SOS" Save Our Shelters webpage. Hedgehogs - Cute, prickly little critters. Not as social as ferrets, but cute as can be. They, too, need to be legalized in California. Japanese Prairie Dog Website - Did you know Prairie Dogs make great pets? I never even thought of them as such until I saw "Arizona Prairie Dogs" in a cage in mall pet store in Tokyo. They were over $1,000 U.S. dollars each! This site is really cute - it turns your mouse pointer into a little prairie dog. Prairie Dogs.Org - This is a more comprehensive, serious website about keeping p'dogs as companion animals. Very good FAQ and list of sites in the webring. Rats - I think rats make great pets. I had a succession of them when I was a kid (Squeaky and Rah-Tah were my favorites). They're smart and can be very affectionate. If you don't like their scaly tails, there is a tailless variety available now. Rat Fan Club is a fun site just for rat-fanciers.
Michael Parks - Surrealism at its best. John Waterhouse- He had a thing for redheads :) Gustav Klimpt- Lushious, gorgeous, romantica. Alphonse Mucha- Art Nouveau to the nth degree. George Stubbs- The Lion and the Horse is stunning. Hieronymous Bosch- Hell, sheer hell. Olivia DeBerardinis- Cheesecake elevated to art. Louis Wain - A famous Victorian-era cat painter. See his art before and after he went insane -- truly eye-opening. I also enjoy Leonardo da Vinci, Beardsley, Erté, and the art deco sculptors, Priess and Chipparus. Here is a fantastical website from Cornell University featuring wonderful & weird artwork from classic worlds of fantasy and horror.
I also enjoy Jeanne Carley's work. I buy her calendar every year — plus copies for friends.
The Ventures - The greatest instrumental group of all time! (And I'm not just saying that because my Daddy is a founding member.) Check their site for tour dates, and go see them in concert. Steven Tyler was in the audience watching them at a House of Blues appearance. He considers The Ventures "legends," as do many of my favorite rock stars. And, check out these cool, collectible posters.
Me and my dad (American Gothic), Me and Jim Morrison, and Robert Plant(I met him, but alas, there is no photographic evidence)Led Zeppelin - Kashmir. Stairway to Heaven. Since I've Been Loving You. My favourite group of all time. I got my first LZ album at the age of 12, and have been in love ever since. And, visit my favorite singer, Robert Plant. The Doors - The End. When The Music's Over. The Spy. In my opinion, Jim Morrison was one of the most exciting, talented, and sexy, men in music history. Here is a beautiful, lovingly crafted Jim Morrison website. Guns 'N Roses - Estranged. You're Crazy. Locomotive. The best real, hard rock group I've ever heard. I am so glad that Axl is back on the music scene! Bush - Glycerine. Everything Zen. Greedy Fly. And Gavin Rossdale...mmm! Kid Rock - Are you "too old to Kid, too soft to Rock"? I'm not! I love his Devil Without A Cause CD. I'm not a fan of rap in general, but I like the hard rock guitars in his songs and his lyrics are very clever. Willie Nelson - The Redheaded Stranger. Angel Flying too Close to the Ground. Time of the Preacher. A country man with a rock soul. One time, I got a post-concert kiss from Willie... I'll admit, it was a thrill! Go to his site, then check out his links to Kris and Waylon. Don McLean - American Pie. Vincent. Empty Chairs. One of the greatest lyricists of all time. Groupie Central - The site for women who love men who rock. Gibson - The folks who made Jimmy Page's legendary red doubleneck. Also, you must check out the most beautiful guitar I have even seen in my entire life! All Music - Great reference site. Soundtracks - My three favorite soundtracks couldn't be any more different from eachother, but I could never pick one over another. So, in no particular order, here they are: MOULIN ROUGE, which features songs performed by David Bowie, Fatboy Boy Slim, U2, and of course Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. There are only a couple of songs on there I don't like (Rhythm of the Night I hate, and Complainte de la Butte, I could live without), but the rest are all "spectacular-spectacular." I especially love Nature Boy, Sparkling Diamonds, Your Song, Children of the Revolution, Diamond Dogs, El Tango de Roxanne, and Sad Hindi Diamonds. INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, which I love for its heartbreaking beauty and its ability to, er, suck me right back into the film whenever I hear it. Composer Elliot Goldenthal did a tremendous job! My faves: Liberame, Born to Darkness, Armand's Seduction, Plantation Pyre, Abduction & Absolution, and of course, Sympathy for the Devil (performed by Guns N Roses). RESIDENT EVIL, because this soundtrack kicks major ass much like Alice, the heroine of the movie (perfectly played by Milla Jovovich). Some of the songs are remixed, and actually sound better than the originals (My Plague by Slipknot, The Fight Song by Marilyn Manson, and Invisible Wounds by Fear Factory). I like almost all the songs, but these are my faves (great for working out to!): The Fight Song, Something Told Me (Coal Chamber), Name of the Game (The Crystal Method), Invisible Wounds, Halleluja (Rammstein), Dig (Mudvayne), Release Yo' Delf (Method Man), 800 (Saliva). See my interviews with Marilyn Manson and Static X here.
I also enjoy The White Stripes, Nirvana, The Cure, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, Arlo Guthrie, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Beck, Sonny Boy Williamson, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iron Butterfly, Steely Dan, The Eagles, Neil Young, Bad Company, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Howlin Wolf, 3EB, vintage Elton John, Allman Bros. Band, AC/DC, Willie Dixon, INXS, Jimi Hendrix, Eminem, Moby, Dennis McGee, Little Queenie, No Doubt, Jane's Addiction, The Strokes, and many, many more!

Also, go to Venice Beach, where Jim Morrison once lived. London - Don't miss Westminister Abbey. It's a delight in art, architecture, and sarcophagai. Queen Elizabeth I is there (as well as Mary Queen of Scots). This site will help you plan your next visit to London. Paris - I could have spent three days in the Louvre. See the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory (Nike), Bottecelli's Venus, and so much more, all under one roof. Don't forget to visit my favorite spot, the Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Movies at a Glance - This is a movie resource site that categorizes everything from horse films to Japanese animation to Vampire horor. If you're looking for movies by category, this site is worth bookmarking. Doug Hutchison - Doug is usually cast as "the bad guy," but he's really quite civilized. I've interviewed him a few times, and he's never even so much as bitchslapped me. I am a fan of several of his films particularly The Green Mile, in which he plays the petulant Percy Wetmore, a prison guard who stomps on an inmate's sweet little pet mouse. On Doug's website, you can find copies of his "Walking the Green Mile" journal for sale (proceeds go to charity). It has some interesting insider's views on the making of the film I recommend it to anyone who wants to know what it's really like to act in a movie.
