Yearling, The (drama and tearjerker)

The Yearling illustrates twelve months in the weather-beaten life of the dirt-poor Baxter family, post-Civil War settlers in central Florida. The focus is on Jody (Claude Jarman, Jr.), a wistful boy who wants nothing more than a pet: "Something for my own, something to follow me," he says longingly. That something comes in the form of a delightful deer fawn named Flag, but the wild critter just won't settle down. Flag's innate refusal to be a lapdog results in heartbreak for young Jody, but also teaches him an important lesson about life. Based on the novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
