Tarzan: The Ape Man (1932, adventure and romance)
Great White Hunters are on the loose in the jungle, looking for sacred elephant burial grounds where they hope to plunder enough ivory to make their fortune. Along for the trek is winsome Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), who gets abducted by Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller) and his merry band of apes, led by Cheetah the Chimp (played by Jiggs). Jane frees herself from the loincloth-wearing hunk and returns to her father's hunting party, only to be abducted again - this time by pugnacious pygmies. It's the yodeling, vine-swinging Tarzan to the rescue! Look for a scene in which Tarzan rides a rhinoceros (played by Mary, who was reportedly very gentle). Several sequels and remakes followed, most notably in 1981 with an unintentionally humorous version called Tarzan, the Ape Man (starring Bo Derek and Miles O'Keefe); and in 1984 with a more true-to-the-book version called Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (starring Andie McDowell and Christopher Lambert). Based upon the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
