Black Cat, The (1934, horror and mystery)

This film combines art deco, film noir, pulp fiction zeitgeist, a screechy music score, and the superlative preening of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. There's very little cat action in this, the first filmed offering of Edgar Allen Poe's short story; subsequent versions directed by Roger Corman, Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento are closer in plot and have more kitty. Look for other Black Cat movies released in 1941, 1961, 1966, 1981, 1989, 1993 and 1995.
