Abyss, The (1989, science fiction and drama)

James Cameron's aquatic sci-fi epic follows a chain of otherworldly events after an American nuclear submarine is presumably attacked by the enemy during the cold war. As the motley crew of oil rig workers and Navy SEALS tackles their mission, they encounter strange alien creatures that may or may not be benevolent. One of the crewmen, Allen 'Hippy' Carnes (Todd Graff), has a white rat named Beany whom he absolutely adores. Beany plays a pivotal part in teaching men to breathe underwater (with the aid of Oxygenated Floral Carbon Emulsion) and adds to the suspense when Hippy almost loses her during a nail-biter of a disaster scene.
